As all except Caliban and Ariel prepare to leave the island, Prospero, who has given up his magic, bids farewell to the island and the audience. Alonso, joyously reunited with his son, restores Prospero to the dukedom of Milan and welcomes Miranda as Ferdinand’s wife. Having all his enemies under his control, Prospero decides to forgive them. The nobles from the ship search for Ferdinand and are confronted with a spectacle including a Harpy, who convinces Alonso that Ferdinand’s death is retribution for Prospero’s exile. Other castaways who appear are Trinculo and Stephano, Alonso’s jester and butler, who join forces with Caliban to kill Prospero and take over the island. After secretly watching Miranda and Ferdinand exchange vows, Prospero releases Ferdinand and consents to their marriage. Prospero secretly approves of their love, but tests the pair by enslaving Ferdinand. ![]() First is Alonso’s son Ferdinand, who immediately falls in love with Miranda. On the island, castaways from the wreck begin to appear. Prospero and Miranda are served by a spirit named Ariel and by Caliban, son of the island’s previous inhabitant, the witch Sycorax. ![]() Prospero had been banished twelve years earlier when Prospero’s brother, Antonio-also on the doomed ship-conspired with Alonso to become the duke instead. On a nearby island, the exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, tells his daughter, Miranda, that he has caused the storm with his magical powers. His character serves towards the lighter romantic aspect of the play.A story of shipwreck and magic, The Tempest begins on a ship caught in a violent storm with Alonso, the king of Naples, on board. He has met many women before Miranda because he says, “ full many a lady I have eyed with best regards” but he vows to not violate chastity before the marriage. He observes his promise to not “ untie the virgin knot” with Miranda before the ceremony of marriage.Īpart from early assumption regarding his father’s death after the shipwreck, everything almost good happens to him. He has absolute control over his mortal desires like lust. When he is carrying those logs (branches) as punishment by Prospero, he does so with deep faith in Miranda’s goodness. His character shows complete faith in the idea of love. If the ill spirit have so fair a house (Ferdinand), good things will strive to dwell with it.” Miranda says of him that “ there’s nothing ill can dwell in such a temple (Ferdinand). It almost feels like happening under the magic of Prospero.įerdinand is handsome and looks completely harmless. From the very first sight, both Miranda and Ferdinand are in love and just a day is enough for them to commit to each other for always. His character does show a great capacity for true love on its part. ![]() By using this union, Prospero devices his own strategy to dissolve his brother’s act of exiling him 12 years ago. His union with Miranda is seemingly an innocent one but in reality, it serves Prospero’s political purpose. The humility of his character is shown when he does the job without any question and already in deep love with Miranda.įerdinand has no critical faculty of his own in the play. Prospero pretentiously punishes him with a petty job of piling up tree logs. Their coming together is entire without any obstruction or effort. He is brought to confront Miranda through the same magic. He is washed ashore on the island separately, as planned by Prospero through his magical power. When it comes to the development of the play, Ferdinand’s character is not a very active character.
